An Architect in Remodeling?
I never planned to enter remodeling, but it was the best thing that has happened to me professionally.
Why? Because I knew my own failings. I was not the best architect I could be because of my inability to estimate my designs accurately. I had also failed to accurately design to my client’s budget too many times. This fault resulted in too many failed projects. No owner can reconcile a cost 20% to 50% above their budget. I had to improve my skills and learn to estimate my designs.
As it turned out, remodeling was where I found the answer.
I Estimate That…
When I left the architecture faculty at Texas A&M and returned to Maryland in 1993, I decided not to take a traditional architecture job. I needed to address my inability to estimate my designs or learn to design to a budget.
So, I went into design-build remodeling. There I finally learned to estimate my designs, and fell in love with design-build remodeling too. I was able to design and estimate dozens of projects each year, honing my new estimating skills.
Awards & Citations
My remodeling designs have received more than 50 Remodeler of the Year Awards and Awards of Excellence. One project received Project of the Year.
For my industry service to the people of Maryland I have been awarded the Governor’s Citation for Meritorious Service by Gov. Bob Ehrlich in 2006 and by Gov. Larry Hogan in 2016.
Awards tend to validate the high level of excellence that was invested into a particular project. However, in my opinion, the single highest award any architect or remodeler can ever receive is a heartfelt “Thank you” from a satisfied client.
So, What’s Next?
I took about a year to collect and organize a career’s worth of experiences and thoughts into the #1 Amazon bestseller Remodel! Without Going Bonkers or Broke. It’s available in Kindle, paperback and audiobook formats.
And now, that same information has been compiled into a new web-based masterclass also called Remodel! Without Going Bonkers or Broke. Now every homeowner in America can learn to prepare for and master the remodeling process!
